PANIONS has the potential to bring together some of the leading European laboratories concerned with studies of atomic and molecular anions, a subject that is of high interest from both the fundamental importance of understanding electron correlation in atomic systems and in numerous applications in mass spectrometry, astrophysics etcetera.

Stockholm University (SU)

Henning Schmidt is a Professor in Atomic Physics and Director of the DESIREE Infrastructure. Henning Schmidt took his PhD in atomic and molecular physics with stored ion beams in Aarhus in 1994, whereupon he moved to Stockholm, where he later became a professor in 2011. He is infrastructure director the cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring facility, DESIREE. His primary area of research is studies of the process of mutual neutralisation between two oppositely charged atomic or molecular ions, a subject for which DESIREE is ideally suited with its combination of merged beams and long storage times. Control of the anion initial state in atomic mutual neutralisation is the subject of the DC9 PhD project.
